What is a Part Stress Analysis?MIL-HDBK-217 includes the ability to perform a part stress analysis. A parts stress analysis is a reliability prediction analysis that provides an estimate of a system's failure rate - how often the system will fail in a given time period. A part stress analysis takes detailed information about the components into account, to offer an accurate estimate of the failure rate. Both part parameters and stress-related parameters are used to create the pi factors that are generally multiplied together to provide the predicted failure rate and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF). What is the MTBF?The Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of a system is a basic measure of reliability for repairable items. It can be described as the number of hours that pass before a component, assembly, or system fails. MTBF can be calculated as the inverse of the failure rate for constant failure rate systems. For example: If a component has a failure rate of 2 failures per million hours, the MTBF would be the inverse of that failure rate.
